This entire block of land includes a large green space courtyard between the motel buildings and has access to a waterside boardwalk where visitors can sit and watch the boats, birds, and wild life. The history of the King Copper Resort begins in the early 1920's when the one of the founders, Charles Kauppi, partnered with another fisherman, and built a dock in Copper Harbor on a point of land they owned together, where the Isle Royale Queen office and dock sits today. Kauppi's fishing boat was chartered to carry people to Isle Royale, such as Michigan Tech Professors to do research, boy scouts to learn camping skills, and church groups for outings. In the 30's he built two boats, the Copper Queen and the Isle Royale Queen, designed just for passengers, which established the first ferry service to the island. Isle Royale became a National Park in 1940. In 1936 the Carl Gilbert "Gib" Christensen Family of musicians who played for silent films or at the Calumet Theater, taught music to students, and had a radio show, moved to Copper Harbor for their Summers. They rented the "Pilot House", a fascinating local and historic attraction. (A 1927 gale on Lake Superior caused the wreak of the Altodoc on the rugged coast of the Keweenaw Point. The pilothouse and a section of deck was cut off during salvage and towed to Copper Harbor. It later was turned into a gift shop and resort.
