2420 Washington Street
Beautiful building, built in the early 1900's was when Lizzie Nicholson purchased the land from the Klein family in 1891. The Marine hospital built in 1853 was demolished in 1892. The Nicholson bought brick and other building materials salvaged from the hospital using prison labor built this combination home and grocery store. During the civil war, while the hospital was still operating, soldiers from both sides scratched names, dates, and regiments into the soft brick. They can be found throughout this building. In 2003 the building was used as restaurant/bar on the top level and a sports bar on the bottom. The restaurant has a vent hood system in place that can fit a double oven, a fryer, and a six burner stove/oven and or griddle. A complete top to bottom renovation was completed in 2003 which included improvements to the plumbing and wiring. Other upgrades includes a new roof in 2014, 19 tons of air/heat. The back porch balcony dining area that looks out over the river has been enclosed but still has the slope of porches that was unique to the building of that era. Off street parking.
