For Agents: Proper Realtor Etiquette

Realtors have a tough job. You're expected to be equal parts guidance counselor, financial advisor and mind reader. Most of all though, you're expected to be a professional. Like any professional, your career must be guided by proper etiquette. Keep these tips in mind and you'll be on your way to becoming an etiquette expert in no time.

  1. Always make eye contact as you speak with clients.
  2. Take the time to listen to your client, even if you feel you know what's best for them.
  3. Never lie to a client or potential client.
  4. Turn your cell phone off when you're with a client, unless you're expecting a call that pertains to that particular client.
  5. Dress "up." As shallow as it may seem, your level of professionalism will be judged by your dress.
  6. Make regular calls to your clients, even if you don't have any fresh news for them. Real estate transactions may be among the largest financial deals your clients will ever make. They want to be up-to-date on its progress.
  7. Make sure to leave a home precisely as you found it. If buyers bring their children along on showings, do whatever you can to make sure that the children don't touch anything. If parents seem unwilling or unable to control their children in someone else's home, be kind, but honest about the importance of respecting the seller's property.
  8. Provide honest feedback to home sellers. Sellers are particularly anxious to hear what buyers are saying about their property.
  9. Retain your professional cool no matter how another agent may be acting. You never know what kind of day an agent is having when you call. Kindness has a way of paying you back and it's likely that you'll run into this particular agent again in the future.
  10. Fax needed documents and return calls to fellow agents in a timely manner.
