Identifying the Best Rental Areas for You

Differences Between Renting an Apartment and a House

As you search through the real estate listings, you may wonder whether it is better to rent an apartment or a house. Before making a decision, consider the advantages and disadvantages of each option carefully.

Primary Differences

  • Space considerations. In most cases, renting a house will provide you with much more living space than renting an apartment. Not only that, but most houses also offer a greater number of bedrooms and bathrooms than apartments do.
  • Yard area. Though apartment buildings sometimes provide a yard, you must typically share this space with the building's other residents. On the other hand, a rented house often comes with its own private yard.
  • Amenities. When you live in an apartment, you will most likely share certain amenities, such as your washer and dryer, with the other people in the building. However, renting a house usually provides you with your own washer and dryer. Conversely, many apartment buildings provide community centers, swimming pools and other amenities not available to tenants in private homes.
  • Cost. For the most part, homes cost more to rent than apartments do. Though they offer many compensating factors, such as more space and privacy, you may not be able to afford to rent the type of home you need if your budget is limited.

Making a Decision

Even after looking over the pros and cons, it can be difficult to choose between renting an apartment and renting a house. To make the best decision possible, keep an open mind when you speak with your real estate agent. Look at both types of rentals, and make your final choice based on the specific advantages each property offers.
