Keeping your home clean doesn’t have to be a chore. Whether you live in a six bedroom house or a studio apartment, these simple steps will help you keep your space spotless all year long.
The first and most important step to keeping a clean and organized home is to simplify. Take a good look around each room and decide what can stay and what needs to go. Anything you haven’t used in the past six months can probably be sold or donated. Outgrown children’s toys or seasonal items should be stored out of view. Uncluttered rooms not only feel more spacious, but they are also much easier to tidy up in a hurry.
2. Start small.
Don’t try to clean your whole house at once. One of the best ways to stay on top of housekeeping is to tackle a few small jobs every day. Maybe on Mondays you only clean the kitchen and dining rooms, and you dedicate Tuesday to the living room (zone cleaning). Or, Mondays might be floor days when you sweep and vacuum every room, while Tuesdays could be for dusting and polishing (task cleaning). Either way, you are only doing a little bit at a time, but seeing whole-house results each week.
3. Create a cleaning schedule and follow it!
Having a weekly routine will keep you on task and prevent you from being overwhelmed. Hang a printed schedule of daily tasks (and who is responsible for each) where everyone can see them. For bi-weekly or monthly chores, set recurring alarms in your phone or desktop calendar to remind you of easy-to-forget tasks like washing shower curtains, dusting ceiling fans, or changing bed linens.
If there’s one thing you absolutely hate to clean, schedule it on a day by itself. Even scrubbing toilets doesn’t seem so bad if that’s the only thing you have to clean that day.
4. Stay in the habit.
Make cleanliness part of your routine. Wipe your sink down every morning, put your dirty clothes in a hamper (not on the floor!), and wash your dishes after every meal.
5. Gather your supplies.
Fill a small, portable caddy with rags, scrub brushes, and a multi-purpose cleaning solution. Keep a basket of supplies on every floor of your house or in every major cleaning zone for easy access.
6. Reset your space every night.
Dedicate a quick 10-20 minutes at the end of each day to organizing and tidying up your living areas.
Incorporate these simple steps into your routine and you will see results in no time. Just remember to forgive yourself for the occasional off day. After all, your home is lived-in, and it will look that way from time to time. But with a little effort each day, a spotless home is within your reach!
